Relationship counseling in my practice is one-on-one with the therapist and not couples. Why? I believe the counseling office should be place where people can temporarily remove themselves from their world to relax and get a better perspective on their life and their relationships. Also, it seems the research shows that “couples counseling” can be just as effective when you work with only one of the partners.
Relationship counseling is not only about romantic relationships. It could involve learning to get along better with your boss, or wanting to be a better parent. Many people go to counseling to help with issues such as consistent arguments, poor communication, difficulty in raising children, dissatisfaction with sex life, or maybe feeling distant from their partner (“they just feel like my roommate”). Our lives are full of different types of relationships, and counseling is great for helping you navigate each of them.
